Don’t tell me how educated you are, but how much you have traveled. - Prophet Mohammed
Hi Everyone! Thank you for taking time to read this. My name is Alexis McCormick, and I currently live in Littleton, Colorado. I am 21 years old and a junior at Metropolitan State University pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. As I begin my next chapters of student teaching and education courses, I have the opportunity to travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico with the school in March 2017.
After moving to Colorado from a small town in South Dakota, traveling has become a major interest within my life. I went into teaching with the idea that we were raising young people to be global citizens, and to inspire and learn literacy and numeracy while following the curriculum. I feel that education is also about helping young people realize their place in the world. My work is inspired by the things that I observe and experience, so the more that I see of the world, the better my work will become. This opportunity to travel within Puerto Rico will help me better understand diversity, opportunities, inspiration and help me to become the educator that can make a change.
The specific program that I'd be attending is centered on the Education, Culture and Diversity of San Juan, Puerto Rico. During my week in Puerto Rico we will be visiting the University of Puerto Rico, various types of schools, El Yunque Rain Forest, La Marquesa Forest, Historic San Juan, art museums, state beaches, and Afro-Caribbean towns. Over the course of my travel, I will be journaling and recording this amazing opportunity and expanding my knowledge to share with others.
The program fees are approximately $2,579.51. The money that I raise will go towards the $500 deposit fee for our teacher to travel with us, gas and transportation around Puerto Rico. Your donations would be a huge benefit in my future as an elementary teacher and is greatly appreciated.
Love Always,
Alexis McCormick
