Phil Lucero grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and later moved to Denver where he attended Metropolitan State College, as it was then known. A video production major, Phil was a proud graduate of the Technical Communication program at MSU Denver. Phil was well known in the Denver area - he owned Phil Lucero Productions, a Denver video production company, and Transmission Studio, a broadcast and corporate television production studio. Phil worked with a variety of clients ranging from celebrities and sports figures to small business operators, charities and corporate entities. Phil was a gregarious individual who wanted to give back to the university community. He volunteered his time as a guest lecturer in video classes, provided internship opportunities and hired students to work on his video shoots. He also provided his video expertise to nonprofit groups, including one for battered women. Phil was a founding member of the Technical Communication Alumni Board and actively participated in alumni activities.
The purpose of the Phil Lucero Memorial Endowed Scholarship is to recognize and reward technical communication students who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom and who have a passion for their discipline. The name of the scholarship was changed to honor Phil Lucero, who was randomly murdered while driving home from work one night. His murder remains unsolved. His wife, Vera, is also an MSU Denver graduate and has participated in events that benefit the scholarship fund.
